GEO vs AEO vs SEO: what they mean and which your business needs
SEO earns rankings in traditional search results. AEO structures your content so answer engines and featured snippets can quote it directly. GEO makes your business a source that generative AI tools cite when they compose an answer. They share one foundation, and most businesses need all three, but the gaps show up in different places.

Three acronyms, one question
Owners ask us some version of the same question every week: “Do I need SEO, or this GEO thing, or AEO?” The honest answer is that they are three views of one job, which is being the business that search systems understand, trust and recommend. Each one describes where the recommendation happens.
SEO: earning a place in the results
Search engine optimization is the discipline everyone knows. It makes a website crawlable and fast, matches pages to what people search for, and builds the authority signals, links, reviews and mentions, that convince Google a page deserves to rank. Its output is a position on a results page and the clicks that come with it.
SEO has not gone away. Google still serves a results page for almost every search, and for many local and commercial searches the map pack and the top results still get most of the clicks. What has changed is that the results page now often opens with an answer.
AEO: being the answer
Answer engine optimization is about the moments when a system gives one answer instead of ten links: Google’s featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants reading a single result, and the direct answers in Bing and Perplexity.
Those systems pull from pages that answer the question cleanly. That means putting the direct answer in the first sentence or two, using the actual question as a heading, keeping the answer self-contained so it can be quoted without its surroundings, and backing it with structured data such as FAQPage and Service schema that says the same thing in a form machines read. A well-ranked page that buries the answer in paragraph six loses to a lesser page that puts it first.
GEO: being cited by generative engines
Generative engine optimization covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and the AI Overviews that compose an answer from several sources rather than quoting one. These systems decide what to say based on which sources look authoritative, consistent and clear, then cite or recommend those sources.
GEO work, then, is about becoming a source. Original explanations, checklists and comparisons that other sites reference. Consistent facts about your business everywhere it is described, because contradictions lower trust. Clear entity signals: who you are, where you are, what you do, in schema and on your Google Business Profile. And being present in the places these engines read, which includes review sites, directories and industry publications.
Where they overlap
All three sit on the same foundation: a fast site that can be crawled, pages that match real questions, and facts that agree everywhere. Fix the foundation once and every layer benefits. Skip it and none of them work.
The differences show up in what you measure. SEO is measured in rankings, impressions and clicks. AEO in snippet and AI Overview appearances for tracked questions. GEO in how often your business is cited or recommended when you ask the engines what your customers ask.
Which one is your business missing?
A quick self-check:
- If you do not rank for your core services in your area, start with SEO. Nothing else will compensate.
- If you rank but AI Overviews or snippets above you cite competitors, your pages are not answering first. That is an AEO problem.
- If you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for “the best [your service] in [your city]” and you never appear, or the details about you are wrong, that is a GEO problem: the engines either do not know you or do not trust what they know.
Most businesses have a little of each, which is why we treat them as one service and measure all three.
Questions people ask
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Generative engines still find and evaluate businesses largely through the web that SEO makes crawlable and credible. GEO extends SEO; a site with a broken foundation will fail at both.
Do I need different content for AI search?
Usually not different content, but content structured differently: a direct answer up front, questions as headings, facts that are consistent everywhere, and structured data that says the same thing in machine-readable form.
How do I know if AI engines mention my business?
Ask them the questions your customers ask, in several phrasings, and record who gets cited. We do this on a schedule for clients and track it alongside rankings and leads.
